My Gluten Free World

Hello and welcome to Gluten Free Glasgow, my name is Katie, I’m twenty years old and living in Glasgow, Scotland.  I currently study digital marketing at The University of Strathclyde and I am interested in creating a blog about gluten free dining.

When I was thirteen years old I was diagnosed with an intolerance to gluten and for the past seven years of my life I have been living with a gluten free diet. Before having a gluten free diet I was constantly unwell every time I ate and because of this I began to keep a food diary to highlight what foods would trigger these symptoms. Along with medical advice I discovered I had an intolerance to all foods gluten.

Once I cut these foods completely out of my diet I felt better physically and mentally as I could enjoy food again! One of my favourite activities is going out for dinner and being able to enjoy food is a great passion of mine.  Both my sister and myself have to undergo a gluten free diet and are always keen on trying new places that offer us a wide range of foods.

Over the years gluten free options have improved greatly, when I first removed gluten from my diet there really was not much choice however in recent years it has become more ‘fashionable’ and ‘trendy’ to go gluten free. Tennis player Andy Murray, reality star Kourtney Kardashian and fashion icon Victoria Beckham follow a strict gluten free diet as a healthy life style choice.  Now due to demand restaurants have had to adapt to the consumers needs and provide more gluten free options.

Over the next few weeks I am going to dine out in restaurants in Glasgow and the surrounding areas to find out what they have to offer for those who follow a gluten free diet and evaluate how extensive their menu is. I look forward to sharing my option and knowledge with you all.

Andiamo Italian Restaurant

Andiamo is an Italian restaurant located in Giffnock and Milngavie just outside the Glasgow area.   Again as I have previously mentioned Italian is most definitely my favourite cuisine. At Andiamo they have a dedicated gluten free menu available which ranges from starters including, bruschetta, olives and a range of Italian meats served with buffalo mozzarella. Main courses including, gluten free pasta either spaghetti or penne, risotto (often a popular gluten free option as risotto is made from rice), meats and fish along with sides of garlic bread, homemade chips and mash potato. Lunchtime... Andiamo is not only great for an evening meal however they offer a range of gluten free sandwiches which are perfect for lunchtime. The sandwiches range from steak, BLT, club and tuna mayo, I chose the club sandwich this includes pancetta, chicken, iceberg lettuce and tomato served on gluten free toast absolutely delicious with a side of chips (or ...

Orchard Park Hotel

Being gluten free is never easy to get a variety of different options and especially pub food that involves steak pie, chicken pie, fish and chips and many more gluten containing foods. On this occasion, the Orchard Park a local pub, restaurant and boutique hotel located in the Giffnock area offers those on a gluten free diet a variety of choice. The gluten free options are available on the main menu with GF marked next to the available options. The menu ranges from steaks with available sauces without wheat flour, mussels, curry, a variety of different salads including Caesar and lastly a beef or chicken burger with an available gluten free bun and chips! My Choice... Normally most restaurants do not offer a gluten free beef burger never mind offering a burger bun that also contains no gluten products, so of course I was over the moon to be able to have a proper burger again! The burger was served with house burger relish along with lettuce, tomato and ski...

Babbo Italian Restaurant

Italian food has always been my favourite cuisine but of course it involves all things gluten! Pizza, pasta, bread all contain wheat flour however, many Italian restaurants due to the demand of gluten free provide the options of gluten free pizza, pasta and bread. At Babbo they have a wide variety of gluten free options, they may not have a specific gluten free menu however it is integrated in their al la carte menu with the symbol GF.    The restaurant is situated in the Giffnock area just outside of Glasgow (2 Mains Avenue, Giffnock, Glasgow). There are many options to choose from within the al la carte menu and this is typically unusual for those on a gluten free diet. Lets get to the good part… the food!!   Starter For my starter I opted for bruschetta, this often is not an option for us GF diners however the bruschetta is served with gluten free bread slightly toasted with tomatoes, red onion and rocket. It was amazing, ...
